Alarms often provide the first indication to a user that something is wrong. However, many alarm systems fail to consider the human requirements for recognizing, diagnosing and managing alarms, which can lead to slow or inappropriate responses to fault conditions.
Attention to Human Factors is a key factor in ensuring that alarms are presented and handled in a way that assists the users to diagnose the cause of alarms and to prioritize their responses to different alarms.
Ergonomists will advise on:- alarm detection and recognition
- alarm prioritisation and reduction
- alarm handling
- alarm management
- diagnostic support
This can be done either by undertaking a comprehensive human factors survey of a complete alarm system using ergonomics guidelines such as those proposed by EEMUA (1999), or by incorporating the consideration of key alarms into a task analysis for emergency scenarios.
